Place Intelligence has partnered with ARUP and Hassell to host a series of ‘Illuminating Conversations’ at the 2021 MPavilion to explore how data produces knowledge in cities, how knowledge institutions engage the public in new ideas, and the critical role that design plays in engaging the public in these institutions in a post Covid-19/climate emergency world.

Join us on 6 December, 6pm to 830pm, at the MPavilion for an event of three robust discussions with a group of inspiring practitioners.

Norion Ubechel, CEO, Place Intelligence, Sarah MacArthur, Head of Innovation, City of Melbourne, Niels Wouters, Senior Design Researcher, Paper Giant, Marion Terrill, Cities and Transport, Grattan Institute, and Bonnie Shaw, Chief Strategy & Impact Officer, Place Intelligence will come together for a discussion focused around:

DATA AS ILLUMINATION – Urban data experts discuss how new forms of city data make hidden patterns visible and public, illuminating access to knowledge, and how our knowledge institutions are responsible for the ways that ideas move and spread through a city.

Anna Burkie, State Library of Victoria , Rory Hyde, University of Melbourne, Lauren O’Dwyer, Arts Centre Melbourne, Eugenia Lim, visual artist and co-director of Aphids, and Bree Trevena, Head of Research and Innovation, ARUP will come together for a discussion focused around:

MPavilion is Australia’s leading architecture commission—a cultural laboratory where the community can come together to engage and share.

It is an initiative of the Naomi Milgrom Foundation who make an annual commission to an outstanding architect to design a pavilion for the Queen Victoria Gardens, in the centre of Melbourne’s Southbank Arts Precinct. The MPavilion then becomes the focus of a free program season of cultural events and interventions, lively talks, performances, workshops, installations and kid-friendly experiences.

At the close of each season, the MPavilion is gifted by the Naomi Milgrom Foundation to the people of Victoria and relocated to a new, permanent home, where it can be engaged by the community. Find out where to visit MPavilions in Victoria.

The 2021 MPavilion has been designed by MAP Studio (Venice) who are renowned for their site sensitive work. The geometric, kaleidoscopic design —‘The LightCatcher’— has been envisioned as an urban lighthouse, set to illuminate MPavilion’s diverse program of free cultural events over the summer.

Commenting on their MPavilion design, Traudy Pelzel said: “The structure we imagine is a shimmering device that qualifies itself as an urban lighthouse that hosts and enlightens the cultural activities planned for the 2021 summer season in Melbourne….A kaleidoscopic structure that reflects and amplifies activities, people and colours. For this reason, we call it ‘The Lightcatcher.’”

The MPavilion design comprises a reticular steel structure in galvanized and painted tubular profiles that support a set of panels in a mirror-finish aluminium coating, reflecting light, colours, activities and people who will use the space. These surfaces will also function as shading elements. The MPavilion 2021 structure appears to float above the ground level on a coloured, organic-shaped surface.

MAP studio’s design has inspired MPavilion’s program themes for its 2021/22 season of free events and will open in the Queen Victoria Gardens, Southbank Arts Precinct, from 12 November 2021 until 27 March 2022.

We hope you can join us 6pm – 830pm, 6 Decemeber, 2021.

It’s going to be a fun night of robust discussion. Hope you can join us under the kaleidoscope.
